VMware ESX Server
ESX Sever is a robust, production-proven virtualization layer that abstracts processor, memory, storage and networking resources into multiple virtual machines. The ESX Server delivers the highest levels of performance and scalability required for enterprise IT environments.

VMware Server
Unlike ESX Server, VMware’s Server product (based on the previous generation’s GSX Server) runs on top of another operating system, such as Windows or Linux.
